Thirtyfourth week in Ordinary Time

Word for today
The Gospel of Luke 21:1-4

The all of nothing, the nothing in the all

The combustion engine, better defined as internal combustion engine, is a particular kind of heat engine which uses heat as energy carrier to produce mechanical work. Inside the combustion chamber, a mixture of fuel, such as petrol, and a combustive, the air, is transformed in heat which then becomes mechanical work. Said in a simple way, fire becomes movement. But how come that when we stop to refuel, we don’t ask the petrol station attendant to give us fire but petrol? Because it’s true that is fire that is transformed in movement, but is the fuel that allows it. In the tank there must be fuel, not fire. That’s how it works.
It is the same for us. We take in food which is transformed in energy, used by the body in many different and complex ways. Amongst all the existing substances, many, but not all of them, can provide proper energy for the human metabolism. An hungry one cannot feed onto a steel railway, nor he can drink petrol if he’s thirsty. For each metabolism there is a dedicated and functional energy. The engine, safe in the combustion chamber, transforms fire in mechanical work and, to do that, uses fuel; but if the combustion, by mistake, was to happen inside the car, that would be very dangerous. Confusing energy levels is always dangerous and lethal. We cannot fill the tank with fire, rather, carefully, we need to avoid that happening. The same thing happens with the energies which we develop in our heart and spirit. From an economical point of view the trading power, the energy that comes from the exchange of those two small coins the widow put into the temple’s treasury, is like nothing, but from the point of view of the energy developed in love and gift at a divine level, those two small coins are far more valuable that the entire offerings. Giving to others what we don’t care to give up, giving others the surplus, generates a kind of energy which is the energy of separations and not of sharing and, in time, this energy will make everything and everybody resonate with the energies proper to that energy, which are misery and slavery.
From a human point of view those two small coins are nothing, bur Jesus underlines that from a divine point of view that nothing, those small coins, represent the generation of a greater and more powerful vital energy. Learning to love and to give from the heart is more functional to the physics than to the metaphysics and the moral. Love, gift, sharing develop a kind of energy dedicated to human growth and human evolution which will enter in resonance with other competent energies which are wellbeing, wisdom and peace.  What seems nothing to the human mind’s eyes, for the sake of the evolution of profit and gain, power and prestige, to the eyes of God is all that is needed for spiritual evolution.  What seems to be everything to the human mind’s eyes, for the sake of evolution of profit and gain, power and prestige, to the eyes of God is like nothing for spiritual evolution.
