Word for Today

The Gospel of John 1:43-51

Follow me

Follow me, literally: adhere to me! is the Greek imperative akolouthèo, meaning “I follow, go with, imitate; I walk together, I conform myself, I adapt myself, I adhere to; I correspond with, I am consistent with.”
Following is important, but it's not everything. In fact it isn't very much; it's limiting and restrictive because it is staying on the outside, or staying behind. Jesus wants us to follow him, but he doesn't want us to stay on the outside. Jesus wants us to enter into Him completely, to adhere to him, to adhere completely. Adhering to Him, penetrating His will, entering into His Word, being intimately a part of His Love is what Jesus' follow me implies. Follow me! is not the beginning of a new religion or of a new ritual but the beginning of a love story, a love story which will empty us of everything else and prepare us for eternity.
