Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

Word for today
The Gospel of Matthew 14:1-12

The best of the best

Jesus himself revealed that John the Baptist was the greatest among men born of woman. John was the holiest of all men and women in the entire history of the world as far as wisdom, intelligence, holiness, inner greatness, faithfulness to God, prophecy, spiritual power, capacity to love God and his fellow men were concerned. How could any human group endowed with even a glimmer of intelligence not take advantage of the unheard and unique gift of an encounter with the holiest, wisest of men? What incredible, useful things could have been born from that encounter for the sake of true well-being of all mankind? What an extraordinary opportunity, what a unique and unbelievable event, what an unbelievable and amazing event! If that encounter had been used in an intelligent way, it could have changed human history and pointed in the direction of a bright evolution.  How, instead, was the historic encounter with the greatest man in all of human history? He was put him in a terrible prison and beheaded at a birthday party by a bunch of loud, fat politicians, all excited about a teenager's dance under the satanic view of an evil woman. John the Baptist's bloody head, on a plate still dirty with food: that is how our generation organized the encounter with the most open-minded, great, enlightened man in history. A few years later, fruit of the same source of stupidity and violence, with arrogant wickedness, Jesus will be nailed to the cross and killed, the Saviour of the world, the Messiah, the Son of God.
Will this violent and arrogant attitude and behaviour, unquestionable sign of ignorance and endless stupidity that our generation has always reserved for the best of the best have consequences on the quality and prospects of our lives?
