Servants
One can live life as a faithful servant. The faithful servant knows that the world and life are a gift from God; they are not a personal property and even if he/she feels at home on this beautiful earth he/she never forgets that the Landlord is someone else. Having a mental and spiritual attitude which never forgets that the Landlord is someone else allows persons to live this life and the earth as a gift, a special predilection, a singular, unique opportunity. It allows people to choose to respond to the gift of life with a lifetime full of love and loving service to humanity, a fruitful life responding to what the Spirit within each of us desires. The mental and spiritual attitude which forgets that the Landlord is someone else makes people live this life and the earth in a distorted sense of suspense and challenge; it makes those persons consider life as a road with no exit, a burden to be shaken, a duty for requisitioned slaves living sadly and rebelliously. Existence then becomes an opportunity to address only one's own interests and to pursue one's own benefits consumed by frustration, aggressivity and attacks of unquenchable thirst for success, possession and power. This mental and spiritual attitude leads people to empty their lives of its intrinsic and sacred value and forces them into living a shameful, decadent life, without peace and in total hypocrisy.
In the light of these two choices concerning life, Jesus' words, Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come, take on a special meaning and a particular although not unique value. In fact, for the faithful servants who have spent their lives as a gift at the service of goodness, beauty, justice, mercy and faithfulness, Jesus' words, Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come, come as a wonderful announcement that He, the Lord, the loved Love, may come back at any moment. For those who love him, this is the announcement that their Loved One will return, maybe suddenly, and it cannot but arouse joy, enthusiasm, excitement, heavenly gratitude and celestial goose bumps
But, for the evil servants who have violently abused life and all living things for their own benefit by leading lives at the service of power, vanity, competition and conflict, Jesus' words, Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come, have and take on a totally different meaning. They are the dreadful announcement that He, the Lord, the King of kings, may come back at any moment, and He can use the power of creation and of life itself against those who with poisonous hypocrisy, in the name of their own benefit and in the most arrogant disrespectfully way, have turned the wonder of creation into oceans of tears and useless fatigue, into forests of utter despair, into mountains of terror, into glaciers of fear, into rivers of misery and abysses of death. For those people who consider themselves the masters of life and of the world, Jesus' words, Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come are considered only the ridiculous utterings of some strange religious sect. That is why mass media makes reference to everything nowadays except to the Gospel. But one thing is certain: if human power has succeeded in disparaging and ridiculing the strength of the Gospel in mankind's mind, just as in His first coming, Jesus continues to be faithful to His favorite way of writing His messages in the cosmic pages of the heavenly powers, amidst the stars and the planets, the galaxies and the comets.
