Fifth Day of the Octave of Christmas

The Word for today
The Gospel of Luke 2:22-35

Let Go

After seeing the baby Jesus who had just been presented in the temple in Jerusalem in accordance with the Law of Moses, the righteous man named Simeon asked the Lord  to let him go in peace from this earth. Now that he had seen with his own eyes the Messiah of the Lord, the Light, the Incarnation of every prophecy and revelation, every grace and truth,  now that the Law of Moses had found its completion and every prophecy had reached fulfillment and all waiting was over.
Before we go to sleep at night after the day has come to an end the Church sings this luminous song of faith and using these words it invites us to give our existence back to the person it belongs to: God. Every day is a service at the service of life, every day is full of happy and sad events, but before we go to sleep to repose it is wonderful to give back everything to God, to lay in his hands the accomplishments of the day , all of the plans we hold in our hearts, the desires of our souls and to ask Him to let us go as we thank him for everything.
It is wonderful to close our eyes before we go to sleep knowing that everything that we have lived during the day has in any case been an encounter with Salvation, even those moments we did not understand or appreciate. It is wonderful to close our eyes every evening in the awareness that everything the day has given us was in any case and always is a revelation of light, a possibility to grow and to walk towards happiness and peace. It is wonderful to fall asleep as if sleep were part of the great return trip during which we  have completely abandoned everything even our breathing and our entire being in the hands of the Lord our God knowing that those who have seen Him and who believe in Him will not know death that dissipates life but instead takes us back to the house of God.
