The Gospel of John 1:35-42

Gazing

It is by looking that we fall in love. It is by looking that we make decisions. It is by gazing that we love, we wait, we know, we pray, we meditate. It is by looking that we decide to forgive or to seek to revenge, compassion or resentment. It is by staring that we can see beyond or decide not to look that way anymore. It was by watching that John the Baptist was able to see Jesus deep in His heart and recognized that He was the Lamb, the gentle, humble, divine Lamb of God. It was while he was watching Him walk by that John presented Him to his disciples in such a liberating and powerful way that it made the ones who were listening be overcome by longing. It was by looking at him that Jesus, the Master, loved Peter, looked deeply in his heart, chose him, making him be born again and giving him a new name, Kephas. It is by gazing at Him that we will gradually fall in love with Him until He and only He will live in us, within us, and we will be immersed in Him because we are the ones He was watching and continues to watch.
When we will feel His gaze upon us, the gaze of a lover, then that awareness will allow us to become who we are, children of God.
