The Gospel of Luke 10:1-9

Huiòs eirènes

The abundant harvest to which Jesus refers is mankind, the mankind that lives in separation and in division, far  from God and from itself in a condition of prostration and desolation expressed in the total absence of peace and well-being. This abundant harvest needs huiòs eirènes, "son of the peace", literally, son of peace. The semitic expression "son of the peace" has different meanings: it means a peaceful man, but also a man open to peace, a man destined to peace. Mankind, divided and separated within itself, needs to be inseminated by the seed of the light of men who are sons of peace, open to peace, men destined to peace, men of unity. Jesus sends His huiòi eirènes (huiòi, "sons", plural of huiòs) to meet other huiòi eirènes to fortify the force and the light of unity and peace. However, the number of huiòi eirènes that can be sent is very small compared to the existing need of peace and unity. When Jesus says: so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest he does not mean that mankind must pray askingGod the Father to send more laborers of peace, almost as if one could beg God to be more prompt, attentive, thoughtful and timely in providing huiòi eirènes at the service of the Kingdom, so that mankind can find its peace and unity again. Jesus' words are an incredibly innovative and unheard-of call. Jesus invites mankind and the church to pray that God the Father may support with His strength many of his sons so that they can remain men of peace and of unity in a world heading for revenge and poisoned by the domination of anger and wrath. Jesus invites mankind and the church to incessantly pray asking God the Father to give His strength to an always bigger number of sons so that they remain or return to being huiòi eirènes, lambs of peace in a world full of ravenous wolves and ferocious predators, to put themselves at the service of the abundant harvest of a mankind sick, divided and separated in each of its existential dimensions. It is impossible to consecrate oneself to God for mankind's sake without consecrating and dedicating oneself to unity no matter what they may cost cost. The harvest is not lacking vocations, it is lacking huiòi eirènes ready to choose unity and peace above all and everything, above and beyond any self-interest.
The huiòi eirènes are not perfect, but they must decide decisively and definitively in their heart to follow the way of unity and of peace as the only possible way. When the huiòi eirènes, God's laborers, allow themselves to be persuaded by the force of money to rule the harvest of mankind, they betray their mandate as they become producers of division rather than of unity and are no longer sons of peace. When the huiòi eirènes lean on the power of the stock exchange,  the market, and profit to subdue the harvest of mankind, they become producers of division rather than of unity. When the huiòi eirènes put their destiny in the hands of their self-interest to fill their bag of greed, possession, and security, they propagate division and not unity. When huiòi eirènes, the laborers of God, become superb because of their power and prestige and they boast about their friendships with the powerful of the world, they become sowers of separation rather than of unity.
The is a piece of news for all. For God's laborers, for children of peace, for the lambs of the Gospel, for the ravenous wolves of the world, for the superb and arrogant dominators of the wide kingdoms, for those who live to fill up their bags by pillaging people and populations, there is an important piece of news: the Kingdom of God is at hand for you, and much closer than anyone can imagine and think. The Kingdom of God is close, very close, meaning that it is already amongst us, but it is also returning, it is returning to comfort the weeping of the poor, to silence the voice of the superb, to confuse the minds of the world's wisemen, to fill with dust the projects of the ravenous wolves, and to restore unity and peace. When God's Kingdom will return to earth, there will not be enough bunkers for the powerful ravenous wolves to hide and protect themselves. And God's laborers,  the children of peace,  the huiòi eirènes will not cease to shed tears of commotion, to sing songs of praise and blessing, and to rejoyce.
