Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

Word for today
The Gospel of John 1:29-34

Behold the Lamb

John the Baptist points to Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Jesus is the Lamb of God who:
- can forgive the sins of the world, all of the occasions in which mankind has missed the target;
- frees humanity from evil and sin, and does so in the guise of a helpless Lamb, a meek lover, not as a judge or an executioner;
- frees man's heart  from the guilt caused by continuously missing the target with respect to the targets that really matter in life;
- releases man's heart from any debt owed given the enormity of the damage caused by missing the target;
- moves and will move in every direction and situation throughout history, always as the Lamb of God, always without violence, in total love, meekness, and humility of heart.
John the Baptist is aware that Jesus has the power to save the world and to free man from all evil, sickness, disease, death and slavery in order to lead him to peace; but he is also aware that Jesus will fulfill His mandate in a completely unexpected and unforeseen way. Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah and the Savior of the world, will always use the “weapons” of the Lamb - love, compassion, mercy, gentleness and sweetness - in order to fulfill God the Father's will. John the Baptist is aware that the Lord, God's Lamb, could save him from jail and being beheaded in the blinking of an eye, but that He will not, as He will not fight against power and injustice using strength or violence. The Lamb will, without dobut,  take care of him, but not as his mind or fear expect. John the Baptist is the first man to believe in Jesus and is the first to experience Jesus' infinite freeing power, but he is also the first to experience the absolute divine unpredictability of the steps and the "arms" of the Lamb, who, in this case, does not free him from jail or from being beheaded.
Only the Lamb knows that the head of John attached to John’s body makes the earthly life and the manifestation of the greatest among those born of women possible and makes the announcement of his precursor possible; at the same time, only the Lamb knows that the head of John on the tray of Herodias testifies to God's glory and allows the seeds of God's Kingdom to be sown.
