The Gospel of Luke 4:31-37

Coincidence

The demons that Jesus met on His journey during His visit on earth were perfectly aware who Jesus was and they knew the marvelous, sublime gifts of wisdom that He brought for humankind's salvation and wellbeing. In the gospel texts the demons are the ones who, before and better than anyone else, decisively proclaimed, asserted, declared that He was the Son of God and showed Him absolute subjection and fear. The demons knew very well who Jesus was and that his presence on earth and the wisdom He brought to humanity were the ruin of their evil, deadly satanic kingdom. That is why when they met Him they cried out: Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God! The demons wanted Jesus to go away because His divine presence and His message were the ruin of the kingdom of evil. The demons cried out rebuking Jesus because they knew very well who he was and what He could do.
Making Jesus and his message disappear was the same, identical, tenacious desire of the religious leaders, scientists, theologians, Biblical scholars, political and economic leaders in Jesus’ time. They would have liked to cast Jesus away, to make Him disappear and in fact, at some point they managed to condemn Him as evildoer, to torture Him as the worst enemy and to kill Him as a blasphemer, an enemy of humanity and God. Demons and men of power have the same feelings towards Jesus and His message: annihilate Him, make Him disappear, because He will be the ruin of their kingdom. Is it a coincidence? How could Jesus and His message be the ruin of Satan’s empire and the kingdoms of the religious and political leaders? Simply because the powerful - be they religious or political leaders - were in the hands of and at the service of the same kingdom: Satan’s. In Matthew 4:8, in which the temptations of Jesus in the desert are described, the gospel clearly and unequivocably outlines this reality through Satan’s words: Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me." Satan can offer Jesus all the kingdoms in the world in their glory in exchange for His adoration, because those kingdoms and the religious, political, economic, and cultural leaders have always belonged to him, they are his creation, his private property, if not, how could he be able to freely dispose of them. Satan and the powerful want to eliminate Jesus and His message because Jesus can ruin their kingdoms. Why? Because Jesus is able to sow in men and women’s hearts the wisdom and awareness that it is only by dedicating themselves to love and by letting God’s love invade them that a true change towards true wellbeing and happiness can take place. Humanity’s change towards true wellbeing and happiness, which Jesus came to inspire, cannot take place through knowledge coming from the beliefs of the religious, political, cultural, scientific, military systems. This is a time in history when noone, noone on earth, no political or religious leader can alter or modify the interior, intimate choice of every individual to dedicate him/herself or not to love or to let him/herself be invaded or not by God's light. This is the time in history in which it is  the free choice of every individual to give birth to a new people, and not what took place in the past when it was the convictions and the beliefs of the mass which created the individual.
